From milking cows growing up, to breeding cows after completing college, Nick Schmelzer has served as a dairy consultant with Barton Kiefer Dairy Consulting for almost a decade. With a degree in beef and livestock from Ohio State University, Nick currently works with farms in Southeast Ohio, Pennsylvania and Kentucky.
“I don’t like to think of myself as a nutritionist, but as a dairy consultant,” he says. “I work very closely with farmers in breeding, nutrition, veterinary care… truly in every aspect.”
Nick has always had a desire to work with the best when it comes to his career, and that is what attracted him to first become a Barton Kiefer consultant. With a specialty in reproduction, he is glad to be a part of team with varied expertise, and knows that he can reach out to other Barton Kiefer consultants if he encounters a problem he needs help with.
“We are always looking in the industry for what is lacking,” Nick explains. “Barton Kiefer is willing to put it all on the line to achieve a result.”
It is this willingness to try to new things that sets Barton Kiefer apart to Nick, and keeps them on the front line in the industry. And it is seeing these results, and optimizing the potential of each cow that he works with, that he enjoys the most.
